Abstract

One of the methods of explaining religious teachings in the school of Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.), in the face of the ideas of the opponents of Islam, has been the debates and protests that the infallible imams (a.s.) or those who received their training did throughout history. Throughout history, discussions and debates with opponents have often revolved around doctrinal and theological issues. The most important cities of the Islamic world and cultural centers of Islamic civilization, due to the presence of various political and religious groups, have witnessed many debates between groups, especially between Shiites and Sunnis during the 7th to 11th centuries of Hijri. In this research, based on the descriptive, analytical and historical method, we are trying to investigate the goals and consequences of the formation of these debates by referring to library sources.

According to historical documents, the basic goals of Shiites in their debates with Sunnis are based on clarifying Shia thoughts and beliefs, discovering the truth, completing arguments with the other side, defending religious beliefs, promoting rationalism in the analysis of religious teachings, and refuting persistent deviant thoughts and beliefs. and classified the consequences of Shiite and Sunni scholars' debates based on scientific, political, cultural and social consequences.
